The story

The story behind the work.

NIKJOO transformed a deteriorated South London chapel that had lost much of its character through piecemeal alteration. The design preserves the scale of the original volume while improving light, comfort and flexibility for living and creative work.

A cantilevered mezzanine organises the interior and creates a studio overlooking the main volume, with a new roof terrace beyond. Oak, birch plywood, concrete and stone distinguish the contemporary intervention from the restored historic fabric.
