What is Revit?

Revit is building information modelling (BIM) authoring software from Autodesk. Instead of drawing lines, you model the building once: plans, sections, elevations and schedules all come from the same data-rich model, so a change in one place updates everywhere.

Across UK architecture it is the dominant documentation platform, particularly in medium and large practices. Job specs list it by name, and Revit proficiency is often a filter rather than a nice-to-have for Part II, architect and BIM roles.

If you are early in your career, learning Revit properly is one of the highest-leverage moves you can make: it widens the roles you can apply for, strengthens your portfolio, and opens BIM coordinator and manager pathways later on.

  • It appears in job specs

Employers name Revit directly in adverts. Having it on your profile puts you through the first filter instead of around it.

  • It shapes your portfolio

Sheets, schedules and model extracts built in Revit show you can deliver, not just design. Practices read that fast.

  • It opens BIM pathways

BIM coordinator, BIM manager and design technology roles grow from strong Revit foundations.

FAQ

Common questions about Revit

Short answers from Architecture Social editorial guidance.

Your answer opens in ArchGPT. You can keep asking from there.

What should a BIM Manager or BIM portfolio show?

A BIM portfolio should prove how you use information, not just that you can open Revit. Practices want technical judgement, modelling habits, coordination experience and clear communication of project information. Strong evidence combines project context, model examples, drawing outputs, coordination evidence and a clear explanation of your role — including stage, software and responsibility.

Why does Revit still appear in so many UK architecture job adverts?

Many practices use Revit because their projects, clients, consultants and internal standards are already built around it. Hiring someone who can open models, understand sheets, manage views and work within a coordinated workflow reduces friction. That does not mean every role needs an advanced BIM specialist — Part I, Part II, Architect, Technician and BIM Coordinator roles are judged differently.

What level of Revit do I actually need for architecture jobs?

Early-career candidates should show they can navigate a model, produce clear drawings and learn quickly. Architectural Assistants should connect Revit use to project stages, coordination and documentation. Architects and Project Architects should show model judgement, team coordination and delivery awareness. Technicians and BIM candidates should show standards, families, clash awareness, schedules and model health. Senior candidates should explain how digital workflows improve delivery, not just which buttons they know.

How should I prove Revit skill on a CV?

Do not just write “Revit” in a software list. Give context: project type, stage, drawing packages, coordination, model size or specific tasks. A stronger line looks like: used Revit on a residential scheme from developed design into technical coordination, including plans, sections, schedules and consultant mark-ups.

What does a strong BIM portfolio caption look like?

Software screenshots without project context are hard to assess. Add captions that explain the problem, the task and the outcome. A stronger example: Revit model and drawing package for a residential planning submission. Role: updated model geometry, coordinated drawing revisions and produced GA sheets under the project architect's direction.

How should I show Revit work in a portfolio?

Your portfolio does not need to become a software manual. Show the output of your work: coordinated drawings, technical details, model views, schedules, diagrams or a short explanation of your role. If the work is confidential, strip sensitive information and explain the evidence carefully — a hiring manager needs confidence, not a full internal model.

What are common Revit mistakes on architecture applications?

Common mistakes include calling yourself advanced after a short course, listing Revit with no portfolio evidence, confusing software confidence with technical judgement, ignoring other tools the role needs, and applying for BIM-heavy roles without explaining model standards or coordination experience.
