Two historic Chelsea townhouses previously divided into nine flats are reorganised as four generous apartments while accumulated alterations are stripped back to reveal their character.

The story
The story behind the work.
The pair of Georgian townhouses had Victorian and Edwardian extensions and had been subdivided into nine flats during the 1950s. Le Lay Architects reorganised the buildings as four front-to-rear apartments, creating clearer layouts and orientation across the historic fabric.
A new lift and high-level heating and cooling improve access, comfort and the value of the upper floors. The practice's knowledge of Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian construction guided the removal of inappropriate later layers and the coordination of specialist trades and craftspeople.
