The brief
The question behind the work.
Aran’s final masters thesis project, Levelling the Playing Field is a feminist-led architectural thesis that reimagines Old Trafford Stadium as an inclusive, adaptive reuse project for Manchester United Women’s Team. Challenging the patriarchal legacy of stadium design, the proposal integrates feminist design principles to reshape a historically male-dominated space. While maintaining the original structural bowl, the scheme introduces target- ed interventions, such as accessible concourses, prayer rooms, sensory suites, and family facilities conceptualised as ‘feminist technologies’. These elements prioritise care, equity, and dignity, reframing the stadium as a space for all. Supported by actor-led narratives, sustainable systems, and construction de- tailing, the project offers a bold architectural response to exclusion in sporting infrastructure
