Terra Vitae Morte

Terra Vitae Morte is Beatrice Tartaglini’s final thesis project, created with Landscape Architecture student Eve Davis at the Manchester School of Architecture. Situated in Manchester's Southern Cemetery, this contemplative structure provides a sanctuary for those processing grief, offering spaces that guide individuals through stages of Loss and Rebirth.

Designed to be inclusive of all beliefs, Terra Vitae Morte incorporates both human and non-human elements, with moss, fungi, and lichens symbolizing resilience and life’s cyclical nature. Key architectural features include semi-private, public, and private grieving areas, each fostering a unique stage of the grieving journey. The project’s progression from secluded spaces with minimal light to open, naturally lit areas symbolizes healing and reconnection.

This project uniquely integrates architecture with ecology, transforming grief into an experience of introspection and growth. Through intentional design and natural materials, Terra Vitae Morte fosters a profound reflection on the unity of life and death.
