Your first architecture job interview is not a test of whether you know everything. It is a test of whether you can explain your work, listen properly and show enough evidence for the practice to trust your potential.

The best candidates prepare without sounding robotic. They know their projects, understand the practice and can explain what they did in plain language.

This Architecture Social video is useful because many first interviews still happen online, where clear answers, preparation and setup make a real difference.

Listen: Clubhouse interview tips for your first architecture job

This Clubhouse conversation gives more context on the mistakes and preparation points that matter when you are trying to secure your first role.

What to prepare before the interview

  • Three projects you can explain clearly.
  • One example of a problem you solved.
  • One example of feedback you acted on.
  • Your software confidence and where you are still learning.
  • Why this practice and this role make sense.
  • Two or three questions for the interviewer.

How to explain your projects

Do not walk through every page of the portfolio. Pick the projects that prove the role you want. For each one, explain the brief, your responsibility, the challenge and what the project shows about you.

  • Start with the project purpose and scale.
  • Say what you personally did.
  • Explain one decision, not every drawing.
  • Connect the project to the job description.
  • Be honest about group work, tutor input or practice team output.

Online interview basics

Online interviews can feel less formal, but they still need preparation. Test the link, camera, microphone and portfolio screen share before the call. Have a PDF ready in case the share fails.

  • Open the portfolio before the call starts.
  • Close tabs and notifications.
  • Use a quiet, well-lit space if possible.
  • Keep answers shorter than you think.
  • Pause before answering if the question is broad.

Questions you should be ready for

  • For a longer list, use the Architecture Social interview questions guide.
  • Tell us about yourself.
  • Talk us through a project you are proud of.
  • What software are you strongest in?
  • What type of practice are you looking for?
  • How do you handle feedback?
  • What would you like to learn in your next role?

Common mistakes

  • Giving generic answers that could apply to any practice.
  • Talking through the portfolio chronologically instead of strategically.
  • Pretending to know software or stages you have barely used.
  • Forgetting to ask questions back.
  • Sounding apologetic about being early in your career.

Architecture Social view

Stephen’s recruiter view is that interview confidence comes from preparation and honesty. You do not need to sound senior. You need to sound clear, interested and aware of what you can contribute next.

Next step

Before your next interview, prepare three project stories, check the CV and compare your evidence with live Part I and Part II roles.
