    Description

A Resilient Beauty: The East Coast Northland Residence

Perched on the rugged cliffs of Northland’s East Coast, this exceptional residence commands awe-inspiring views. However, these panoramic vistas come at a formidable price: the unrelenting assault of gale-force winds and driving storms. Designing for such a volatile environment is becoming an increasingly crucial element in modern architecture, and this project exemplifies how to turn these challenges into creative opportunities.

    Embracing the Elements

Conceived to withstand the harshest of weather conditions, the house is strategically anchored to the ground with deeply bedded concrete walls, ensuring resilience against the elements. The low-pitched roofs not only reduce the building’s profile but also minimize its exposure to harsh winds. By simplifying the building form and roofline, any potential points of weakness that could be exploited by the violent weather are eliminated. This robust foundation allows the design to then freely maximize the breathtaking views through large glazed areas and carefully framed openings.

A Blend of Strength and Lightness

Despite its fortress-like resilience, the house exudes a surprising sense of lightness and openness. The living area, which cantilevers slightly over a naturally landscaped slope, offers a spectacular sense of floating above the cliff. This juxtaposition of sturdy exposed concrete finishes with airy, light-filled spaces creates a balanced and inviting atmosphere. The design succeeds in its primary objective: to craft an architecture that is simultaneously simple, resilient, and breathtakingly beautiful.

    Harnessing the Site’s Natural Contours

The designated building platform is a slender, elongated opening set amongst native bush and follows a high ridge line above the coastline. One of the site’s dominant features is the sweeping 180-degree view, stretching from Whangarei Heads in the north to Mangawhai Beach in the south. Capturing these vistas was a key focus of the design brief.

The house is meticulously designed to follow the site’s natural contours while maintaining ocean views from all main spaces. Additionally, it offers picturesque views of the rolling native bush to the west, creating a harmonious blend of sea and land.

    Sleek Design for Extreme Conditions

The extreme wind conditions demanded a sleek, aerodynamic design. The low-pitched roofs help the house to hug the ground, reducing wind resistance. In-situ concrete fin walls run through the house, anchoring it firmly into the land and creating a sense of permanence. Meanwhile, the cedar-clad living space cantilevers over the ground, offering unobstructed views as the land slopes away towards the ocean.

    Thoughtful Integration with Nature

Access to the site is from the west, and the garage has been cleverly dug into the heavily landscaped bank. This not only prevents the garage from dominating the visual landscape but also provides clear direction for arriving guests. The design continues to impress with a private courtyard space for the guest bedroom, offering both privacy and a serene outdoor retreat.

    A Courtyard Oasis

The central courtyard deck serves as a sheltered outdoor living space, ingeniously designed to trap the sun and shield the occupants from the wind. This extends the usable outdoor space, making it ideal for entertaining and children's play. The courtyard becomes an oasis, a microcosm of comfort and warmth amidst the often harsh coastal environment.

    Marrying Form and Function

This Northland residence stands as a testament to what can be achieved when form and function are seamlessly integrated. The house not only withstands the brutal coastal elements but also provides a comfortable, uplifting living environment. The design marries the raw, unyielding strength of concrete with the warm, inviting textures of cedar and glass, creating a harmonious and enduring family home.

    A Visionary Collaboration

The success of this project is a result of visionary clients, an adventurous design team, and an exceptional builder. It is a bold outcome that respects the site’s natural beauty while meeting the practical demands of modern living. This residence is more than just a house; it is a sanctuary that offers a breathtaking escape from the ordinary, a place where resilience and beauty coexist in perfect harmony.

The East Coast Northland residence not only exemplifies architectural innovation but also serves as an inspiring model for designing in extreme environments. It proves that with thoughtful design and a commitment to excellence, even the most challenging sites can yield extraordinary, resilient homes.
