The Huysmanhoeve regional center in Eeklo stands as a testament to the seamless blend of history and modernity. Rooted in the historical typology of the moat farm, this masterplan aims to transform Huysmanhoeve into an open, flexible, and multi-purpose gathering place, preserving its rich heritage while embracing contemporary needs. This ambitious project involves the sensitive renovation of two existing barns and the addition of two new structures, all thoughtfully designed to respect and enhance the historical site.

The Transverse Barn: From Rustic Charm to Modern Cafeteria

The transverse barn, one of the two existing structures on the site, is set to become the new heart of the Huysmanhoeve center—a vibrant cafeteria. In renovating this barn, the design team has meticulously preserved its layered character, ensuring that the essence of its original wooden truss structure and outer shell remains intact. This careful restoration is more than just a nod to the past; it’s a celebration of the craftsmanship that defined the era.

Two bold interventions distinguish the new cafeteria. First, a glass façade now bisects the interior, creating a dynamic interplay between a covered outdoor space and a conditioned indoor area. This transparent divide retains the openness of the original barn while introducing modern functionality. The second intervention, a new chimney, stands as a striking contrast to the existing architecture. Designed with distinct materials and techniques, this chimney integrates seamlessly into the barn’s context, housing modern building technologies essential for the facility’s new purpose.

The Cowshed: A Tribute to Agricultural Heritage

The second existing building, a cowshed constructed in 1958, is repurposed to house multi-purpose classrooms. This stable is more than just a structure; it symbolizes the pioneering spirit and modernization of agriculture in the post-war period. By retaining its spatial individuality, the renovation both honors the past and paves the way for future educational endeavors.

The transformation involves cutting away part of the upper floor at the entrance gate, making way for new internal vertical circulation. Additionally, two external staircases are added at the ends of the building, allowing flexible access and use. The existing structure provides the framework for an open-plan layout, enhanced by four new glass walls that can be fully opened. This flexibility ensures that the classrooms can function independently or as a unified space, adapting to various educational needs.

New Structures: Echoes of the Past, Visions of the Future

While the renovations of the transverse barn and cowshed pay homage to the historical essence of Huysmanhoeve, the two new buildings introduce a contemporary contrast, reflecting the site’s evolution through time. A new, open steel shed is added to the existing barn, featuring two conditioned spaces within. Although its materialization contrasts sharply with the traditional barn, the new shed's color, typology, and proportions draw inspiration from the transverse barn, creating a harmonious dialogue between old and new.

The second new building, known as the 'shack,' houses a wood-chip stove and serves as a practical yet sculptural addition to the site. Built with a similar structure to the shed, the shack is finished in brickwork, seamlessly blending traditional building materials with modern design. Its chimney-like tower, which doubles as wood-chip storage, adds a sculptural element to the site, further enhancing the architectural narrative.
