A Vertical Approach to Urban Living

Faced with the challenge of fitting a modern, spacious family home into a compact inner-city block, the architects made the strategic decision to build upwards. This vertical approach not only addresses the spatial limitations but also preserves a sizable courtyard that doubles as potential on-site parking. The residence comprises sleeping and private quarters upstairs, while the ground level houses public living spaces and a guest bedroom, ensuring a clear separation between private and communal areas.

A Nod to History with a Modern Twist

The T2 Residence is situated on a street characterized by early 20th-century workers' cottages, juxtaposed against residential warehouse conversions on the opposite side. This unique setting allowed the architects to walk a tightrope between old and new, creating a design that pays homage to the area's history while embracing modernity.

The facade of the T2 Residence is a playful interpretation of the traditional workers' cottage. The use of timber cladding evokes the charm of the past, while the design details, such as the profile of the front fence, reflect a contemporary sensibility. The recessed entry porch contrasts with the typical porch experience of the original cottage, and the single sash window—elongated and brought forward with a steel plate surround—adds a striking, modern element to the facade.
