    Description

A Lakeside Sanctuary: The Break Residence

Nestled on the serene shores of Lake Revdor in the Laurentians, the Break Residence stands as a testament to architectural ingenuity and the powerful connection between home and heritage. This luxurious abode was designed to fulfill a man’s deeply-rooted desire to build his final home on the land of his ancestors. Spanning three levels, this spacious residence offers a warm and inviting space for a close-knit community of neighboring houses.

    Dual Personalities Revealed

The Break Residence presents two distinct faces, each offering a unique perspective depending on whether it is approached from the water or the ground. This duality is cleverly crafted to harmonize with its surroundings while fulfilling the ambitious design program. The challenge of constructing on a particularly narrow lot was met by replacing an existing structure with a new, innovative design.

From the street side, the residence appears as a series of interlocking volumes, reminiscent of natural rock formations. The sloping topography cleverly reveals only two levels from the street, concealing the garden level below which grants access to the lake. A sculptural main entrance lies beneath an impressive double-story canopy, nestled between these rock-like volumes, instantly welcoming visitors and creating a heartwarming atmosphere. The openings in the façade expose the circulation and gathering spaces within, emphasizing the home's convivial nature.

On the lake side, the residence transforms entirely, showcasing an open and extroverted character. Amplified roof overhangs and angled soffits featuring golden accents reflect the lake's ripples and movements, creating the illusion of the house spreading its sails into the wind. This dynamic design element adds a touch of elegance and fluidity to the lakeside view.

    Raw Materials Enhancing Beauty

Upon entering the Break Residence, one is immediately enveloped in a sense of calm and comfort. The interior is bathed in natural light throughout the day, with expansive windows offering unobstructed views of the lake. The choice of materials within the interior architecture further enhances this tranquil atmosphere, with a focus on timeless, natural elements.

At the heart of the residence stands a striking stone wall, reminiscent of a ship's mast. This architectural feature serves as both a space separator and a unifying element, anchoring the house and accommodating three fireplaces across different levels. This stone wall extends from the interior to the exterior, seamlessly blending both spaces and reinforcing the fluid, graceful design language of the house.

Every material used in the Break Residence was thoughtfully selected to contribute to its timeless aesthetics and enduring beauty. The expressive veining of quartzite, which echoes the colors of water, the textured slate, the warmth of oak and maple furniture, the maple flooring, and the Western Canadian hemlock ceiling all combine to create a harmonious and cohesive design. As these materials age and develop a patina, they will continue to enhance the residence's character and charm.

    Luxury and Hospitality Intertwined

Space and luxury are dedicated to promoting hospitality within the Break Residence. Each level is accessible by an elevator and features a service area, a coffee station, and a bar. Additionally, every room boasts its own bathroom and balcony, providing guests with privacy and comfort. The residence is punctuated with small, contemplative lounges and boudoirs, perfect for moments of relaxation and enjoyment of the serene surroundings and breathtaking views.

Much like a rock providing a stable anchor, the Break Residence is an ode to hospitality, generosity, comfort, and the beauty of nature and its elements. This architectural marvel not only fulfills a man's dream of building his final home on ancestral land but also stands as a beacon of community and connection, blending seamlessly with the natural landscape.
