Cultural Compass of Gosport by Tician Turi

Cultural Compass of Gosport by Tician Turi is a cultural centre architecture project about drawing people from the high street into a richer civic and landscape experience.

The project is strongest when read as a gateway. It is not only a building for art; it is a route, a meeting point and a reason for local people to return.

Project overview

Tician graduated from the University of Portsmouth with a 1st Class Architecture (Hons) degree and is seeking a Part I Architectural Assistant role. The project shows cultural, social and visual thinking in one portfolio piece.

The building takes cues from the historic Gosport Lines and translates defensive architectural language into a contemporary cultural place. The exterior has a tougher presence, while the interior becomes lighter, calmer and more social.

What the cultural centre does

  • Acts as a gateway between high street movement and quieter green space.
  • Supports a gallery for local artists with changing exhibitions.
  • Provides a flexible ground floor for talks, events and community gatherings.
  • Uses contrast between a robust exterior and a softer internal atmosphere.
  • Shows graphic, visualisation and photography skill alongside architectural thinking.

Why the project is useful for a Part I portfolio

For a Part I candidate, this kind of project can work well because it has several layers: site movement, cultural programme, community use, atmosphere and visual communication.

The key is to make those layers legible. A practice should be able to understand the route through the project, who uses it, what happens inside and how the drawings prove the idea.

Showcase a cultural or community project

Architecture Social can feature student work that explores galleries, cultural centres, local identity, community use or public routes through a site.

  • Explain the user group and cultural purpose.
  • Show how people arrive, pause and move through the project.
  • Use drawings and images that prove the atmosphere.
  • Make the portfolio useful for practices, not only for tutors.

Architecture Social view

Stephen’s recruiter view is that portfolio projects become stronger when the reader can describe them back in one sentence. Cultural Compass is at its clearest when the gateway, gallery and community purpose are all working together.
