Symmetrys is a structural and civil engineering practice based in north London, designing small, medium and large scale structures across the UK and overseas. Founded by Chris Atkins in 2006, the practice sums up its approach as personable engineering with reliable results, combining technical knowledge with a commitment to considerate, responsible design.
The team works across many sectors, including commercial and workplace buildings, private homes and residential schemes, hotels, retail and leisure, education and community projects, and heritage. Services span structural engineering, civil engineering, BIM, demountable structures and modern methods of construction (MMC), facade remediation, and pre-planning and basement design.
Sustainability sits at the centre of the practice. Symmetrys has invested in low carbon design and a low carbon office, and has developed FerrousWheel, a Revit tool created with London South Bank University that helps engineers identify and specify reclaimed steel to reduce embodied carbon. The Roots in the Sky project in Southwark shows the approach in practice, reusing an existing 1960s building and its foundations and adding a lightweight hybrid steel and cross laminated timber frame to carry one of London's largest rooftop urban forests.
Symmetrys is an employee owned practice, having moved to an Employee Ownership Trust to give its team a long term stake and a stronger voice in the business.
