Description
Eltham North Playground in Eltham North, Victoria, is a community project with deep local roots. Gardiner Architects designed and helped build the original playground a quarter of a century ago, and it became a fixture in local children's lives for more than two decades before fire destroyed it in late 2017. The practice returned to reinstate the much loved facility, working with Jeavons Landscape Architects and playground builders Naturform.
Set within parkland, the single-level playground is identified across the site by an angled roof that reads as a feature element in the landscape. A large shading roof gathers the play elements together, sheltering a slide and a climbing net, while timber slat shading filters the light. The project was completed in 2018.
