Here is Ysabel's Design Thesis. For this project, she decided Redesign a "PC Bang", a Korean Internet Cafe. With PC meaning Personal Computer, and Bang meaning room in Korea. Her design looks to expand and challenge the traditional use of the PC Bang's ways of community and collective gatherings. Through the use of colour, the project also aims to explore a PC bang as a place of play.
For some social context, a PC Bang has become a social place in which all casual use or gamers gather to browse the internet, relax and play multi player games. The site, set in Seoul South Korea, is the Capital gaming city in the World. The importance of the PC bang in modern day South Korea is extremely important. With 9.8 MIllion citizens, the densely populated city lacks privacy and space. With the physical limitations, the PC Bang has now become the ideal space to escape the world. PC Bangs are usually located in underground basements with no windows, allowing gamers to lose all sense of time.
The project aims to redesign the PC Bang to challenge gamers and physically and literally step into “the play space”. It aims to slow down the gamer’s experience and generate a new community. The design investigates five different scenarios of play. Extreme Play, Collective Play, Scattered Play, Leisure Play and Retro Play.
