Maria's final design studio submission is for a new master plan and urban model for the Island Quarter in Nottingham. The project's main purpose is to create a new high-medium density urban housing that is highly connected with the city and the existing ecological corridor. This complex is characterized by community-based solutions from the courtyard to the roof terrace. Besides the residential units, the development has an active frontage along the green boulevard, plazas, and several pedestrian and green areas enhancing the livability and walkability of this neighborhood. Concerning the landscape, local species, wildflower meadows, and wildlife are key elements to encourage biodiversity and preserve the ecosystem which is our strongest defense against climate change.
