An extraordinary opportunity, an adventurous client ready for risks, and an exceptional builder—a dream commission.
The riverfront plot facing south was occupied by a charming but worn-out 1940s worker's cottage. Nestled between two mature trees—one facing the street and the other the river—the cottage exuded a secluded and sheltered ambiance that needed to be preserved. With towering high-rises surrounding it on both sides, this house would be the sole remaining dwelling on the street, demanding excellence and making the most of every inch of the valuable development potential.
In a departure from the norm, our brief defied conventions. We aimed for a modest three-bedroom home with a single living room, prioritizing quality over quantity. This approach allowed for expansive landscaping and ensured that the new home would maintain a manageable scale for years to come—a special place to cherish for a lifetime.
Though the built home may be small in size, it embodies meticulous thought, attention to detail, and precise specifications. Unlike the original lightweight workers cottage, this new residence stands as a solid, enduring structure, firmly grounded with extensive use of off-form concrete. Frameless glass and generous volumes embrace the surrounding trees, preserving the home's original connection to the site and river.
The project epitomizes a true collaboration, with all parties embracing the challenge and pushing their respective stages to the limit. A bold outcome for an audacious client, this home offers an idyllic retreat to be enjoyed with loved ones—a truly breathtaking escape from the ordinary.
