Milton Flat is the reworking of a cramped, dimly lit ground floor garden flat into a generous, open-plan family home. Paul Archer Design replaced the original half-width rear extension with a full-width structure, giving a young family the additional living space they needed.
Glazing does much of the work. Full-height glass doors span the entire width of the new extension, opening the interior to the garden and letting it be enjoyed from across the plan. A side courtyard brings daylight deep into the home. Where the new work meets the existing structure, the openings have been kept deliberately small to control cost, yet they earn their place by connecting spaces and framing interesting views.
The material palette is restrained. A white-on-white interior keeps the scheme simple, with white joinery and matching Corian worktops. That white continues outside, across oversized sliding doors and white cladding also fabricated in Corian. A set of large yellow doors frames the view and adds a note of playfulness to an otherwise cost-effective scheme.
The project completed in 2015 and is arranged over two levels.
