Set on a steep incline in Lorne on Victoria's Surf Coast, Skyline House is a bushfire-resilient family home by Lachlan Shepherd Architects. Because the site sits in a bushfire prone area, the design turns a solid, fire-rated face towards the direction of greatest threat. That protective edge does double duty: it wraps a sheltered internal courtyard that draws north winter sun deep into the living spaces.
The steep gradient shapes the section. Rather than fighting the slope, the house steps up the hillside across three levels, with carport and storage at the base, the living zones on the central level and the bedrooms at the top. Arranging the plan this way keeps an unobstructed view corridor open from every level.
The material palette was chosen on two fronts: to meet the stringent bushfire compliance requirements of the site, and to keep long-term maintenance close to nil.
