About the Designer
AIDA ALI BAKRI IS CURRENTLY AN INTERIOR ARCHITECTURE GRADUATE FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF WESTMINSTER. IN HOPES TO FIND WORKING OPPORTUNITIES IN KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA.
Showcased is Aida's final thesis project, 'Through The Lens', which focuses on exhibiting the renowned works of celebrated street photographer Fred Herzog. The exhibition takes place at the Old Boiler House in Brick Lane, London, a raw, industrial space known for its exposed brickwork and tall chimney. The site’s gritty, urban character complements Herzog’s vivid documentation of street life, while its history as a former industrial site ties into the analog, hands-on spirit of film photography.
The design of the exhibition draws inspiration from the mechanics of film cameras. The main goal of this project is to reignite a passion for film photography among younger generations, preserving what is often seen as a “lost art” in today’s digital world.
Herzog’s work is showcased throughout the space by being projected onto suspended, translucent film rolls. This casting method transforms the venue into a glowing canvas, with Herzog’s signature colors spilling across the space and immersing visitors in his perspective of urban life. To further celebrate the craft of analog photography, the exhibition also includes a fully functional darkroom. This not only allows aspiring street photographers to develop their own images but also offers visitors an opportunity to understand the fascinating, hands-on process of producing a photograph.
