Up on top reworks a 1940s one-and-a-half storey masonry cottage in Queenscliff into a light-filled, contemporary home. Hobbs Jamieson Architecture reorganised the dwelling across three new levels, each spatially connected and oriented to take full advantage of the views to the south.
Lifting the home to capture those views was central to the approach. Well-proportioned decks sit directly off the open living areas, tying inside and outside together and drawing the outlook in. The fit-out was kept minimal and clean, with a mixture of natural finishes used throughout.
That restraint carries to the exterior, where the new work acknowledges the colours and textures of the original cottage as well as the surrounding landscape. Set on a 650 m2 site, the 320 m2 home presents robust, strong forms that are unapologetic to the street, yet remain contextual in their use of colour and material.
