Windiate Architects added a three-storey rear extension to an existing two-storey house in West Melbourne, reworking the residence and its basement within a heritage zone.
The design answers a narrow, constrained footprint. Open steel mesh wraps the three-storey stair, opening up the kitchen's tight plan while doubling as a hanging wall for coats and bags. The retained front room serves as both entry and living space, a basement living room connects through to the rear yard, and the middle-level dining room reads as a glazed pavilion with a small rear terrace. On the top level, skylights bring views as you climb the stair, with an ensuite tucked into the roof space.
Completed in 2017. Project size 182 m2 on a 104 m2 site, across three levels.
