Harmonious community design values for creating a thriving and sustainable living space.

Symbiosis With Nature by Janani Sudhakar

Symbiosis With Nature by Janani Sudhakar reimagines Moston Brook in Manchester through urban greening, landscape design and community wellbeing.

The project is not a wildlife photography page. It is an urban design and landscape proposal about how neglected green space can become useful, restorative and easier to look after over time.

What the project proposes

Janani studied at Manchester School of Architecture and developed Symbiosis With Nature around Moston Brook, an abandoned green space in Manchester. The project connects to the idea of rivers returning to the city and asks how landscape can support both people and ecology.

The proposal combines a neighbourhood park with a larger nature and yoga retreat. It also considers revenue that could support maintenance and help similar neglected spaces improve over time.

Why the design idea matters

  • It treats landscape as social infrastructure.
  • It connects everyday recreation with wellbeing and ecological repair.
  • It thinks about maintenance, not only the opening-day image.
  • It gives the candidate a clear urban greening story for future roles.

Portfolio lesson

Landscape-led projects need to show who benefits, how the ecology improves and how the place is maintained. A beautiful green image is not enough if the reader cannot understand the long-term strategy.

Showcase an urban greening project

Architecture Social Showcase is useful for student work that deals with landscape, public wellbeing, nature recovery and city repair.

  • Explain the existing site condition.
  • Show who uses the space and how.
  • Make the maintenance or stewardship model visible.

Architecture Social view

Stephen’s recruiter view is that urban greening projects are more convincing when they are practical. Practices want to see design judgement, but also an understanding of people, maintenance and long-term use.
