Urh Rucigaj Roberts is a highly motivated Part 2 Architectural Assistant actively seeking a new role in London. Originally from Slovenia with Kiwi roots, he graduated from the Faculty of Architecture University at the University of Ljubljana. His educational journey also includes valuable experiences at IUAV in Venice and BAS in Bergen, which have contributed to his diverse architectural perspective. During his time at these institutions, Urh has been exposed to various architectural styles and methodologies, enriching his understanding of the field.

Exploring Opportunities at the Faculty of Architecture University

Urh also dedicates time to volunteering with organisations focused on social impact through architecture. He believes that architecture should serve communities and address social issues, and he is keen on using his skills to contribute to projects that aim to improve quality of life for underserved populations. This experience has provided him with invaluable insights into the role of architects in fostering social equity and has further fuelled his desire to make a difference through his work.

His background from the Faculty of Architecture University has equipped him with a solid foundation in architectural principles and practices, further enhancing his contributions to social impact projects.

One of Urh’s notable projects during his studies involved designing a community garden within an urban setting. This project highlighted the importance of green spaces in cities and aimed to promote biodiversity and community interaction. Urh conducted extensive research on native plant species and sustainable gardening practices, ensuring that the garden would thrive in its environment while serving as a valuable resource for local residents. The project received positive feedback from both peers and faculty, and it reinforced Urh’s commitment to integrating nature into architectural design.

In addition to his academic pursuits, Urh actively participates in workshops and seminars that focus on cutting-edge topics in architecture, such as passive house design, adaptive reuse, and urban resilience. These experiences not only expand his knowledge but also provide him with opportunities to network with industry leaders and peers who share his values regarding sustainable design. He believes that continuous learning is essential in a field that is constantly evolving, and he strives to stay informed about the latest trends and technologies in architecture.

Currently, he is a dedicated Part 3 student at the Architectural Association (AA), where he is honing his skills and knowledge in preparation for registering as a professional Architect in 2021. The AA is renowned for its innovative approach to architectural education, and Urh is taking full advantage of the resources and expertise available to him. His coursework focuses on advanced design techniques and sustainable practices, ensuring he is well-prepared for the evolving demands of the architectural profession.

As an active member of the Architects Climate Action Network (ACAN), Urh’s passion lies in holistic sustainability, environmental consciousness, and the principles of reuse. He strongly believes that architects have a responsibility to design with the planet in mind, and he advocates for practices that minimise waste and enhance the built environment’s overall sustainability. Urh is involved in various initiatives aimed at promoting green building practices and educating fellow professionals about the importance of ecological design.

Here is Urh’s master thesis design for a low-cost renovation of a non-governmental organisation (NGO) headquarters in Metelkova, Ljubljana. This project envisions a modern co-working environment within an old military barracks, creatively repurposing the existing structure to meet the needs of the various non-governmental organisations that currently utilise the building. The design focuses on creating flexible, collaborative spaces that foster innovation and community engagement while preserving the historical integrity of the barracks. Through this project, Urh has demonstrated his ability to balance functionality, sustainability, and aesthetic appeal in architectural design.

He welcomes connections from fellow professionals, potential employers, and anyone interested in discussing architectural ideas, sustainability practices, or collaboration on design projects. Urh’s passion for architecture extends beyond his formal education; he is eager to engage with diverse perspectives and contribute positively to the architectural community in London and beyond.
