Description

David Chipperfield Architects was founded in London by David Chipperfield in 1985. It is an international practice with five independent offices in London, Berlin, Milan, Shanghai and Santiago de Compostela, each embedded in its local context while united by common architectural ambitions. This family of studios is complemented by David Chipperfield Design and Fundación RIA, a non-profit research initiative based in Galicia.

Working across the private and public sectors, the practice has built a diverse portfolio of cultural, residential, education, retail, workplace and civic projects. Its approach is grounded in a concern for the social and environmental sustainability of the built environment and its role in our collective quality of life. Rather than fixed formal ideas, the work is unified by a focus on the quality of process and discourse, collaborating with clients to mediate their ambitions with the wider social, cultural, ecological and physical context.

The practice has received more than 100 awards for design excellence. Among its major completed works are the rebuilding of the Neues Museum in Berlin, the James-Simon-Galerie in Berlin, the Amorepacific headquarters in Seoul, the Royal Academy of Arts in London and The Bryant in New York. David Chipperfield was awarded the Pritzker Architecture Prize in 2023, the profession's highest honour, recognising a body of work defined by restraint, longevity and civic responsibility.

Culture

The practice prides itself on its open, multicultural and multilingual working culture, with staff from over 40 different countries speaking some 30 different languages and almost half of its staff female. This plurality of perspectives informs the studio culture, encouraging critical thinking rooted in respect and understanding. An active internal programme of talks and events, alongside staff diversity groups, supports awareness and equity around gender, LGBTQ+ and racial equality.

Equality, Diversity and Inclusion

David Chipperfield Architects actively seeks to draw together a broad range of voices and experiences, both within design teams and through design itself. Almost half of the practice's staff are female, and efforts continue to increase representation from groups traditionally underrepresented in the profession. The London and Berlin offices run apprenticeship programmes, offer educational outreach to schools and universities, and provide placements for refugees. The practice is committed to seeking expert collaborators, promoting participatory processes and advocating for overlooked communities and narratives to address equity and inclusion within the profession and the wider built environment.

Values

David Chipperfield Architects' work is guided by a set of enduring commitments. An architecture defined by process: the practice interrogates the unique opportunities of every project, collaborating with clients to mediate their ambitions with the wider social, cultural, ecological and physical context, and favouring the quality of process and discourse over fixed formal ideas. Engaging a plurality of voices: drawing together diverse voices and experiences to create open and inclusive architecture. Responding to the climate crisis: setting exemplary standards in sustainable design, prioritising reuse and designing with durability and future adaptability in mind. Heritage, protection and identity: reusing and rehabilitating buildings for both environmental sustainability and the socio-cultural identity of places. Promoting the values of urbanity: contributing to a common civic and social infrastructure through its urban projects.
