Pollard Thomas Edwards is an architectural practice that specializes in designing homes, neighborhoods, public and mixed-use buildings across the United Kingdom.
With a history spanning over five decades, we have established a strong track record of working with communities, local authorities, and commercial clients to create highly desirable buildings and places for people to live in.
Our team of 150-plus professionals brings together a diverse range of skills, including architectural and urban design, master planning, property development, and community engagement. We are deeply committed to enhancing the towns, cities, and villages where we work.
Despite having the resources and financial strength of a large firm, we pride ourselves on providing a personal service typically associated with smaller studios. We truly understand the unique needs of our clients and the locations in which they aspire to build. Our award-winning project portfolio reflects our deep understanding of sustainable placemaking.
Whether it's bespoke building projects or the masterplanning of entire communities, we approach every endeavor with a people-first mindset. We prioritize understanding the needs of individuals and designing spaces that not only look beautiful but are also well-crafted, functional, and age gracefully.
In addition to designing new neighborhoods and estates, we are skilled at repairing and revitalizing existing ones in need of care. This reputation has led us to take on challenging projects that have been stalled and revitalize them to create thriving places that people enjoy.
At Pollard Thomas Edwards, flexibility is at the heart of our identity. While many of our staff work remotely, our spacious studios at Diespeker Wharf in Islington remain open as a local landmark.
Our team is composed of talented individuals from diverse backgrounds and cultures (we speak approximately 22 different languages). We draw inspiration from an exciting portfolio of projects and foster a working environment rooted in genuine equality and allyship.
We have a longstanding tradition of supporting women in the workplace and cultivating a supportive community for our LGBT+ colleagues. Diversity is the foundation of our professional outlook, enabling us to create truly inclusive places and communities.
Many of our team members choose to build their careers with us, and a significant number return to us after gaining experience elsewhere. This is a testament to the meaningful work we do, our collaborative approach, and the friendly environment at our beautiful canal-side studios in Angel, Islington.
While our staff also have the option to work remotely, we offer a wide range of flexible working arrangements for everyone at PTE. However, our studio is central to our identity. We acquired and converted the Victorian timber mill in the '90s, earning a Civic Trust commendation in 2000 for its restoration. Our garden has also received numerous accolades over the years.
Established in 1974 by Roger Pollard, Bill Thomas, and John Edwards, our practice has always challenged the post-war modernist design approach. We prioritize understanding the desires of those who use our buildings, transforming unused sites and buildings, and creating architecture that respects its surroundings. These principles continue to shape the core values of our practice today, as we believe that good design, combined with intelligent use of resources and a commitment to social and environmental change, can make property development a force for good.
With over 100 dedicated design, technical, and support staff, we have the capacity to handle a wide range of projects with demanding timelines. We deeply value the close relationships we forge with our clients, and approximately 60% of our work comes from repeat business. We ensure that all partners are closely involved with our projects.
Our creative output and business strategy, including service delivery, are guided by partners Patrick Devlin, Dominique Oliver, Tricia Patel, Kaye Stout, Carl Vann, and Justin Laskin. They lead five design workshops covering our residential and mixed-use projects, incorporating teams specializing in education and Third Age housing.
To ensure the highest standards of excellence, our Knowledge Hub provides information, guidance, and quality control for the entire practice. It covers the creative, technical, planning, and procedural challenges and solutions that shape our work sectors. The hub is led by partner Roger Holdsworth, with support from our heads of sustainability, BIM, and technical audit.
Supporting our practice is our finance partner Mary McDonnell and senior managers who oversee our various business functions, including information systems, finance, human resources, premises, and administration.
Senior advisors Andrew Beharrell and Teresa Borsuk bring a wealth of expertise, guidance, and advice to our team from conceptualization to project delivery.
Our Communications Group, comprising writers and graphic designers, produces professional reports, submissions, and consultation materials. They also provide bespoke publishing and branding services for our practice and clients.
Collaboration is at the heart of our architectural professionalism. While we primarily collaborate with clients, contractors, and end-users, we take great pride in our ability to work with other skilled architects and designers on projects that require a multifaceted approach. We recognize the value of being part of a thoughtfully curated design team, working on large-scale, diverse projects. We thrive on the possibilities that arise when talented architectural teams collaborate, as demonstrated by successful projects such as Knights Park, Eddington, North West Cambridge, and Silvertown Quays.
PTE has an annual program and budget dedicated to charitable works, ranging from local community initiatives to international aid appeals. We are committed to youth projects, particularly in our own neighborhood. In collaboration with specialist organizations, we mentor young individuals from diverse backgrounds who aspire to pursue careers in architecture.
