UrbanXR is an augmented reality and mixed reality development studio focused on the built environment. Founded in 2019 and based in Norfolk, the studio specialises in the design and delivery of world-scale augmented reality experiences that place accurate, interactive 3D content into real towns, cities and construction sites.
The practice began as a traditional architecture studio before moving into mixed reality using Microsoft HoloLens 2 on live construction sites, and then into augmented reality. Today UrbanXR works across planning and public consultation, heritage and storytelling, and the on-site visualisation of proposed developments, helping people understand schemes beyond the page or screen.
Its work draws on the Unity game engine, the Immersal visual positioning system and tools such as Trimble Connect, allowing large, detailed models to be viewed in place and explored from any direction. Founder James Lee Burgess is an ARB-registered architect who studied at Cardiff University, bringing an architect's understanding of how people use space to the design of digital interventions in the public realm.
