    Description

In this Architecture Social livestream, Stephen Drew is joined by Vanessa Cazaubon, an Architectural Technologist, BIM specialist and co-founder of E+C Associates, for an honest conversation about building a career in BIM and the wider built environment. Across roughly 50 minutes, Vanessa shares how she moved from architectural technology into BIM, recruitment and career strategy, and what she has learned about standing out and staying adaptable along the way.

    Who this is for

Students, graduates and early-career professionals weighing up a route into BIM or the built environment, architectural technicians and technologists who want to broaden their skills, and anyone considering a sideways move into a digital or strategy-focused role in construction.

    Learning outcomes

By the end of this session you will be able to:

    1. Explain what an Architectural Technician and Technologist does and where the role sits in the design and construction process.
    2. Describe what Building Information Modelling (BIM) is and why it matters to clients and project teams.
    3. Identify the skills, software and behaviours that help you build a career in BIM and the built environment.
    4. Recognise how transferable skills support a move between design, technology, recruitment and strategy roles.
    5. Apply practical tactics for communicating your value and standing out in a competitive market.
    6. Reflect on how to stay adaptable and keep learning as the industry and its tools change.

From interior design to architectural technology

Vanessa describes a non-linear route into the industry, starting in interior design before moving into architectural technology. Her story is a reminder that there is no single correct entry point, and that earlier experience often becomes an asset rather than a detour.

What an Architectural Technologist actually does

Architectural technologists support clients to make the best use of technology to design and build in a more streamlined and sustainable way. The role blends design understanding with technical detail and coordination, and is central to turning ideas into buildable, well-documented projects.

    Why BIM matters

BIM is a process built around an intelligent 3D model that informs and communicates a project across its life. Vanessa explains the practical benefits: problems can be spotted and resolved at the design stage, errors and inconsistencies are reduced, and building owners get the information they need to operate efficiently.

    Selling collaboration in

Collaboration is fundamental to BIM, yet some clients still hesitate to share data openly. Part of the job is making the case for transparency, helping teams move from guarding information to working from a single shared source of truth.

Building a career, not just a job

Vanessa's path runs through architectural technology, BIM, recruitment and into career strategy. The throughline is curiosity and a willingness to keep developing new skills, which is what allows professionals to move between adjacent roles without starting from scratch.

Standing out and communicating your value

A strong idea or a strong CV is not enough on its own. Vanessa stresses the importance of being able to engage, tell a clear story and communicate what makes you different, whether you are pitching to clients or applying for your next role.

    Being comfortable with being uncomfortable

Growth tends to sit just outside your comfort zone. Vanessa encourages staying open-minded, treating challenges as learning opportunities, and accepting that determination and resilience matter as much as technical skill.

    Making the most of mistakes

Vanessa is open about making mistakes throughout her career and in business. Treating them as feedback rather than failure is part of how she has kept moving forward and improving.

    Key terms

    • BIM (Building Information Modelling): a collaborative process using an intelligent 3D model to design, build and manage assets.
    • Architectural Technologist: a professional who applies technology and technical knowledge to the design and delivery of buildings.
    • Architectural Technician: a role focused on the technical detailing and documentation that turns designs into construction information.
    • Career strategy: a deliberate approach to choosing roles, building skills and positioning yourself for the work you want.

Reflective prompts for your CPD record

    1. Which parts of your current skill set are most transferable, and what adjacent role could they unlock?
    2. How confidently can you explain the value of BIM to a sceptical client or colleague?
    3. What is one uncomfortable step that would move your career forward in the next six months?
