Michael Woodford is an architect and Partner at White Arkitekter, where he leads the London studio. He has been with the practice for around six years, and previously studied and worked in the Netherlands and completed part of his education in Copenhagen during an Erasmus year.
White Arkitekter is a Swedish, employee-owned practice founded in Gothenburg in 1951, with around 700 people across studios in Sweden and in Oslo, Stuttgart and London. From London, Michael's team works on healthcare, social housing, masterplanning and urban design projects in the UK and internationally, including work in Canada and Nairobi.
Sustainability sits at the centre of his work. White Arkitekter has committed to reducing the carbon impact of its projects, with a strong emphasis on timber construction, low-carbon design and nature-based solutions. Michael has spoken about projects including a cancer centre in Cardiff shaped by the Well-being of Future Generations (Wales) Act, and a timber, LEED Platinum office building in Uppsala, Sweden.
In his Architecture Social conversation he discusses how a Scandinavian, research-led culture shapes the studio, what he looks for in CVs, covering letters and portfolios, and how architects can build sustainability into everyday practice.
