About

Richard Carr is a Design Director at Landsec, the FTSE 100 UK real estate company. He studied architecture in Leeds and spent around seven to eight years in private practice before moving client-side into real estate development.

At Landsec he works primarily across the company's retail and mixed-use portfolio, acting as a bridge between the commercial teams and the architects and consultants the business works with. He describes much of the role as design-led: setting briefs, shaping the early vision for a scheme, running public consultation with local communities, and translating design ambition into commercially viable places. He is a strong advocate for hand drawing and sketching as tools for communicating ideas, and for mentoring and supporting younger architects and emerging practices as they move through the profession.

On the Architecture Social Podcast, Richard spoke with Stephen Drew about making the move from architecture into real estate, the transferable value of an architectural training, and how developers and designers can collaborate more closely.
