A three-storey home in Queenscliff on the northern beaches of Sydney, designed by Hobbs Jamieson Architecture to replace a post-war single-storey masonry house. The new dwelling is open and light, opens up to the north aspect and captures the sweeping views the site offers.
The design works closely with the significant slope across the site, improving direct access from the street and creating generous spaces that take full advantage of the orientation. A varied natural palette of materials and colours runs through the scheme, calming the larger volumes and tying the home to its context.
The result is a 450 m² home set across three levels on a 550 m² site, finished in 2016. Its street frontage is carefully resolved, the mass is broken up through interlocking volumes and complementary material use, and the building sits comfortably within its surroundings rather than competing with them.
