In a Victorian terraced house in Islington, north London, Cairn restored the existing fabric and added a rear extension for a young family. The project was delivered in phases so that limits on time and budget never compromised quality. Existing surfaces were carefully revived using long-lasting natural materials, and the new rear volume opens onto the garden as a calm family room.
At its centre, a glazed pantry doubles as a daylight box: an internal window draws light into the home office, while full-height glass doors carry it through to the depths of the kitchen beyond.
Project size 180 sq m, completed 2018, across three levels.
Architect: Cairn (Kieran Hawkins).
Photographs: Anna Stathaki and Peter Landers.
