Majd Alkadri is currently a Part 2 Architecture Assistant seeking a job in vibrant cities like London or Cardiff. After graduating with a 2:1 from the Welsh School of Architecture, I am excited to pursue my career further by enrolling in the Part 3 course, which I have been accepted into as a part-time student starting September 2020. With just over a year of hands-on experience in the industry at Hatcher Prichard Architects as a Part 1, I have developed a solid foundation in architectural principles and practices. My experience includes working on various projects where I contributed to the design and development phases, effectively collaborating with senior architects to refine our concepts and produce detailed plans.

The Role of Timber in Modern Architecture

Here is Majd Alkadri’s final master design thesis from WSA, titled ‘Preservation of Timber Craft as a Tool for Integration’. This comprehensive study delves into critical social aspects while also addressing retrofitting of a Grade II listed site. The thesis explores the intersection of immigration, timber crafts, and the significance of forestry and woodlands, particularly in light of the ramifications of Brexit. Through detailed analysis, it addresses ornamentation, identity, and the value of historical and often undervalued sites, proposing innovative methods for preservation that respect both cultural heritage and modern needs. The findings highlight the importance of engaging with local communities and sustainable practices to foster a greater appreciation of timber craftsmanship and its role in contemporary architecture.

As part of my research, I conducted interviews with local craftsmen and architects, gathering insights into the challenges and opportunities presented by modern architectural demands. This qualitative approach enabled me to understand their perspectives on preserving traditional techniques while embracing contemporary design principles. The thesis includes case studies of successful projects that have integrated timber craft into modern architecture, demonstrating how these methods can enhance aesthetic appeal and sustainability. By presenting practical examples, I aim to inspire future architects to consider the historical context and craftsmanship in their designs, fostering a respect for the materials and techniques that shape our built environment.
