Description
Meffigy is a participatory sculpture UnitedMake designed for the Space Series event, taken from brief to completion in a little over two months. Built to bring people together, the installation drew on the language of light beacons, Olympic torches and tribal objects, prompting unlikely encounters and unexpected conversations among the crowd.
The making was as demanding as the concept. More than 1,000 personalised lanyard inserts were produced, alongside weeks of laser-cutting FSC plywood, days of spray painting and over 20 hours of driving to bring the pieces together. As guests arrived, each added their own element, so the work grew in real time into a shared object that showed how many individuals can form a powerful collective.
The sculpture withstood torrential rain during the event and was then deliberately given over to fire, burnt once its purpose had been served. Completed in 2019 in Byron Bay, New South Wales, Meffigy was realised in collaboration with Cube Zero, S P A C E and Terry Mann.
