The Bushidō project is a conceptual exhibition and retail space that translates samurai culture and philosophy into architecture. Rather than presenting history literally, the project focuses on expressing the values of Bushidō - discipline, honour, restraint and controlled force - through spatial form, light and movement. Callum's aim was to create an immersive journey in which visitors physically experience these principles as they move through the building.
Spatially, the project unfolds as a narrative journey between two historical periods. The Heian period is expressed through sharp geometry, compressed spaces, darker tones and dramatic lighting to convey conflict and intensity. This transitions into the Edo period, where calmer proportions, refined materials and softer light represent peace, mastery and reflection. Together, the project demonstrates his ability to translate abstract cultural and philosophical concepts into a coherent, immersive architectural experience.
The site, positioned between two contrasting Georgian façades, plays a key conceptual role. One façade is ornate and expressive, while the other is modest and restrained. He uses this contrast to reflect the samurai’s dual nature, allowing the surrounding context to directly inform the project’s theme of balance between power and humility.
The design language is derived from samurai weaponry and movement, particularly sword strokes. He translates these gestures into sharp planes, fractured forms and precise detailing. Each weapon informs a spatial principle: the katana suggests precision and clarity, the wakizashi symmetry and ritual, the tanto intimacy, the shuriken subtlety and stealth, and the yumi long sightlines and controlled distance. These ideas are developed through sketches, maquettes and light studies that explore how “cuts” in form generate atmosphere and spatial rhythm.
