Scrafano Architects reworked a 14,000 sq ft (1,300 m²) former warehouse in Chicago into a private sport and entertainment venue, built for both family gatherings and large fundraising events.
At the heart of the project, the building's original 30 m bowstring trusses were fully restored, and five large operable skylights were introduced to wash the interior in natural light. The expansive floor plate was reprogrammed to hold an indoor soccer field, interior gardens, a workshop, a kitchen, bathrooms and parking.
To the rear, the team removed a section of roof and turned that part of the warehouse into an outdoor urban oasis. The new open space carries play areas and gardens, along with a fire pit, shade trees and generous room for entertaining.
Completed in 2015, the scheme shows how a robust industrial shell can be adapted into a flexible setting for recreation and events.
